Homage to Jean Tinguely

Commemoration Day and Poster Exhibition

He is regarded as one of Switzerland's most influential and popular artists, who also met with much international acclaim: Jean Tinguely, also known as "Jeannot". Basel was commemorating him with a Tinguely Day on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his death. And Nationale Suisse was exhibiting all of his posters as well as an imposing work from late in his career.

In the footsteps of Jean Tinguely: Working in collaboration, the Tinguely Museum and Nationale Suisse were offering the opportunity to become better acquainted with the artist and his work on Tinguely Day on Sunday 28 August 2011 in Basel.

From 31 August to 30 September 2011 all of the posters that Tinguely created for his exhibitions, ranging from his legendary debut in the Galerie Handschin (1962) to the major Moscow retrospective, were on display to the public in the "Tinguely Hall" of Nationale Suisse in Basel. Jean Tinguely's artistic development could be traced through the years via his posters.

"Cenodoxus Isenheimer Flügelaltar"

Jean Tinguely is featured in the Nationale Suisse collection - one of the most prestigious corporate collections of contemporary Swiss art - with a representative collection of his work. Jean Tinguely's posters were fittingly complemented by the "Cenodoxus Isenheimer Flügelaltar", an imposing late work by the artist and a core item of the Nationale Suisse art collection.

Publications on his life's work and a film documentation perfectly rounded off this homage to Jean Tinguely, who died 20 years ago on 30 August 1991.
